The scheme forms part of a lottery-funded investment into new sports facilities across the Merseyside area. The new build Archbishop Beck Sports College created the only tennis centre north of the city and boasts four indoor courts, three outdoor courts and a dance studio. The centre is a popular attraction and a great attribute to the local community. The facility caters for students at the Archbishop Beck Catholic Sports College, but also reaches out to partnering schools and local sports clubs who can use the facilities and coaching services.
Sutcliffe was appointed as civil and structural engineers for the project and provided a geotechnical and environmental site investigation report. The site investigation highlighted that the location was within 250m of a landfill site, so the ground was emitting carbon monoxide and methane gases.
Sutcliffe innovatively designed the installation of methane/carbon dioxide detection systems and a series of large extracting fans in the roof structure. As the rate of gas emissions was relatively low we co-ordinated the proposal with the Liverpool Contaminated Land Department, the architect and the M&E engineer.
