Contractor Thomas Barnes & Sons

Architects Paddock Johnson

Contract Value £3.0M

Services Civil & Structural Engineering and Geotechnical & Environmental Site Investigation

A landmark new build mixed use development comprising of a two story clinic building for West Wirral Primary Care Trusts, plus six apartments and a Tesco Retail store.

The £3.0M project is located in the heart of the Wirral community and offers healthcare services to more than 20,000 locals. The PCT includes; doctors surgeries, consulting rooms, a day center and administration facilities.

Sutcliffe’s engineering team designed a hybrid steel frame / traditional masonry construction to facilitate the large open plan areas required by the Tesco store, whilst maintaining a cost efficient form of construction for the PCT.

The construction programme was phased to allow the PCT to deliver health care needs whilst the project was being completed and Sutcliffe had to adhere to the full Health & Safety requirements of a live working environment.

The site was on a former petrol station and was therefore heavily contaminated and a full remediation strategy was required prior to construction. This included the removal of 1500 tons of hazardous waste, which had leaked from the petrol storage tanks.

Sutcliffe’s in-house Geotechnical Department successfully obtained a landfill tax exemption for the removal of hazardous waste and saved the Client £60,000.
