The aim of the regeneration project is to refurbish tower blocks in the Old Trafford area of Manchester to act as a catalyst for change. Currently the regeneration project has led to the refurbishment of three tower blocks and the demolition of a further five tower blocks to make way for 180 new homes. A further two tower blocks are currently being refurbished. The key challenges that the tower block refurbishments needed to tackle included:

  • A lack of security
  • Tower block unpopularity
  • Poor heating and ventilation
  • Poor thermal performance of the structure

Throughout the design process optimum solutions were sought to overcome these challenges whilst staying within the tight budget. Examples of these solutions include:

  • Insulated over cladding and roof insulation
  • A new integrated efficient cascade heat recovery and gas boiler system
  • High performance windows and balcony enclosing system
  • Waste and recycling improvements
  • New accessible secure entrances with individual identities.
