The Worthington Primary School extension project involved adding a two-storey classroom block to enhance the school’s facilities with four additional classrooms, store rooms, and extra toilets. Sutcliffe was tasked with designing the structural elements, which included a steel frame structure, a metal deck composite for the first floor, and a lightweight metal deck roof. Traditional strip and pad foundations were used, complemented by precast beam and block systems for the ground floor, and a bespoke platform lift for accessibility.

Project challenges

The project encountered delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting the original timeline. Construction began in May 2020 and was completed by October 2020. Key challenges included integrating the new extension’s foundations with the existing ones, requiring careful coordination and adjustments. Additionally, the below-ground drainage system had to be reconfigured because of the relocation of an existing attenuation tank and adjustments to the drainage network beneath the extension. Sutcliffe managed these challenges effectively, ensuring compliance with SUDS principles and maintaining project continuity.
