What jobs can I get with a civil engineering degree?

A degree in civil engineering will prepare you for a lifelong career in the construction industry, as well as vital knowledge on the business, management and financial sectors.

Jobs directly related to engineering degrees include:

Your civil engineering course will typically cover all the ways we need to understand our surroundings and how to work with the build environment.

Why study engineering?

Engineering is in everything we do and everywhere we go, from our homes to our workplaces and everywhere in between.

You could say it’s an engineers job to improve the ways we work, travel, entertain, stay healthy and even communicate. The skills you will learn when studying engineering will be used to contribute to society, solving challenges and improving the built environment whether that’s through technology innovation or the construction of new bridges and roads.

Engineers are also in very high demand, so upon completion of your degree, you will likely find some fantastic graduate employment prospects.

How long to study engineering?

Degrees in engineering can range from 3–5 years depending on the type of degree, and whether there is a year’s work experience included in the course.

You could also consider studying as a four-year integrated Masters for some more in depth knowledge.

What degree do you need to be a structural engineer?

You’ll normally need a degree or postgraduate qualification in structural or civil engineering.

However, you may also be able to get started with a degree in a related subject, such as construction, the built environment, or maths, but it may take you longer to qualify as an engineer.

You could also take the vocational route, with a Level 3 diploma in engineering or similar.
