This award follows our success at the ICE North West Civil Engineering Awards back in May where Arrowe Park also won the Best Medium Project Award.
This vital project centred on the expansion and modernisation of the hospital’s emergency department to better support both patients and healthcare professionals. The outdated Urgent Treatment Centre and staff accommodation buildings were demolished to make way for a larger, more efficient A&E facility. Key improvements included enhanced ambulance bays and a single-entry point, carefully designed to streamline patient flow and improve overall functionality.
From the outset, we prioritised minimising disruption to the hospital’s day-to-day operations. Our teams conducted surveys and site investigations outside of normal working hours, enabling us to design cost-effective foundations and a reinforced concrete floor slab without impacting hospital services. During demolition, we carefully preserved key structural walls, streamlining the refurbishment process and ensuring cost-efficiency.
The completion of the upgraded A&E department will have a very meaningful impact on patients across the Wirral area with 90,000 patients using the A&E each year. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the Sutcliffe team who contributed to the project, DAY Architectural Ltd and to Tilbury Douglas for all their hard work on the project to make it a success.
