In the redevelopment of Greenbank Student Accommodation Campus, Sutcliffe provided crucial engineering expertise for a £90 million transformation project undertaken for the University of Liverpool. This project aimed to revamp the campus into a contemporary student village, featuring new residential blocks, commercial spaces, catering facilities, and sports amenities, all while maintaining the integrity of certain Listed buildings.

We implemented a hybrid timber and concrete frame system, combining bespoke Glulam timber beams with a structural concrete framework to achieve the project’s sustainability and design objectives. Advanced BIM protocols, including Revit/All Plan, were employed to ensure precise design integration and coordination throughout the project.
Project challenges
The site posed several challenges, including the presence of underground tunnels. To address these, we conducted extensive pre construction surveys, such as intrusive site investigations and drainage assessments, to mitigate risks and inform our design approach.
Our engineering solutions included designing reinforced concrete frames, various foundation types, and retaining walls. We optimised building heights and worked closely with the contractor to refine the design of permanent works, reducing the need for temporary supports and minimising costs.
Sustainability details
A key focus was on sustainability, where we designed a drainage system that utilised an existing pond for rainwater attenuation and employed natural infiltration methods where possible. This approach supported the project’s environmental goals and contributed to a more sustainable development.
Through collaborative efforts and strategic problem-solving, we successfully navigated the project’s complexities, delivering a high-quality redevelopment that aligns with the University of Liverpool’s vision for a modern and functional student village.
