St. Bernard’s Church
St Bernard’s Catholic Church, a notable gothic-style Victorian structure designed by Pugin & Pugin in 1901, is an important landmark on Kingsley Road, Toxteth. Sutcliffe was engaged to provide structural and civil engineering services for the church’s conversion into 16 affordable homes.

The project focused on preserving the church’s historic brick and sandstone façade. Sutcliffe’s approach involved minimising external changes to maintain the building’s original appearance. Internally, the challenge was to incorporate modern residential features while preserving distinctive elements such as the arch colonnades, stained glass windows, and stone detailing.
Sutcliffe’s engineering solutions facilitated the adaptation of the building for residential use, optimising the church’s high floor-to-ceiling heights to create functional living spaces. This careful approach ensured that the church’s historical value was retained while meeting contemporary housing needs.
