Wilmslow High School

Sutcliffe’s role in the Wilmslow High School expansion project started at RIBA Stage 1, aiming to increase the school’s capacity from ten to twelve form entry to meet rising demand. The project involved extensive pre-construction surveys and ground investigations, which confirmed that traditional pad foundations were appropriate for the new extensions. These extensions feature a steel frame with composite metal deck floors and lightweight metal roofs.

Drainage surveys revealed a complex existing network, which was reused where possible and supplemented with new drainage infrastructure. Conlon Construction joined the project at RIBA Stage 4 in January 2021 through a two-stage tender process. Temporary classrooms were installed in summer 2021 to accommodate students during the construction phase. Despite facing delays related to planning and market conditions, construction began in Spring 2022 and was completed in early 2024. The expansion has successfully increased the school’s capacity by 300 places, aligning with the project’s initial goals.
