Crewe Market Hall

Sutcliffe was appointed by Cheshire East Council from RIBA Stage 1 as part of an ambitious plan to transform Crewe’s historic Market Hall.

The council wished to transform Crewe Market Hall into a vibrant hub containing independent food and drink traders and a central stage area for large events. The building was Grade II Listed so required extensive consultation with the local heritage officer to arrive at considered designs.

The existing ground floor was in particularly poor condition and the decision was taken to lay a new ground-bearing concrete slab which would accommodate the new loadings and be accessible to all users.

A small extension to the rear was designed to house new modern toilets and took the form of load-bearing masonry and timber roof joists. The large external archways have been enhanced with new structural glazed windows & doors to create a stunning façade. The project has been an overwhelming success since opening to the public and is part of the wider regeneration strategy of CreweTown Centre.
