At the end of last month, we were thrilled to find out that our previous project, St Bernard’s Church in Liverpool, had won in the Heritage category at the RICS 2020 Awards.

The award honours projects that have demonstrated exceptional work on conservation, renovation, or restoration of a structure.

We were also proud to see that the project, which is based on Kingsley Road in Toxteth, had been shortlisted in the Residential category too.

St Bernard’s Church is one of the few surviving Victorian buildings in Liverpool, and in 2019 we played a part in renovating the structure to create 16 affordable homes for the local community.

We took on the task of providing structural and civil engineering services, geotechnical and environmental investigations, building surveying, pre planning services, temporary works, principal designer, structural inspections and surveys, and flood risk analysis, in order for the scheme to be completed to an excellent quality.

The building is now home to 16 families, with the original exterior preserved and unique features, such as the original stained-glass windows and vaulted arches, preserved and retained.

Sutcliffe’s team of experienced engineers worked in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Liverpool to complete the scheme. As well as Ainsley Gommon Architects, Hamptons NW Development and quantity surveyor, Wilkinson Cowan.

A huge well done to everyone involved – hard work has paid off and we now have an award to celebrate!
